Best carry-on luggage:

£245 | AWAY

The Carry-On, £245 | AWAY
The Carry-On suitcase is sized to fit in the overhead bin of most major airlines, and is compact enough for train and car trips alike. With a durable polycarbonate hard shell and 360 degree spinner wheels that ensure a smooth ride, this suitcase is built to last.

If you're going on a short weekend away, or you're lucky enough to be a light packer, then a carry-on suitcase or bag is for you. Cabin size luggage is usually 56cm x 45 x 25cm, which is the allowance permitted by most airlines including British Airways. However it's always worth checking with your airline for the luggage options, as they can vary.

For example Ryanair's allowance is smaller at 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, so make sure your suitcase is the right size, or you might incur additional costs. Scroll down for more options.

Best large suitcases:

£445 | Horizn Studios

H7 Check-In Luggage , £445 | Horizn Studios
The reliable companion for your journeys of two weeks and longer. The extra-large sustainable luggage is engineered in Germany and built to go the distance. This smart edition complies with the largest check-in size and has a compression pad.

Long-haul destinations call for large suitcases, which saves you whittling down your holiday wardrobe too much. The best ones come with four wheels for easy handling, and separate zip-up compartments for your more delicate items. Though fabric suitcases are generally lighter, for long trips I recommend hard shell cases as they're more durable and are less likely to get damaged in transit.

Best light suitcases:

£145 | Eastpak

Tranverz M Gaming Green, £145 | Eastpak
Eastpak's medium travel trolley is designed for week-long trips and longer stays away. Load up the double compartments of this lightweight luggage and glide with the smooth-wheeling system.

If you're worried about weight allowance or simply want to save your arm strength, then there are plenty of lightweight suitcase options around, especially those made of fabric shells.

Our Ecommerce Writer, Grace Lindsay (opens in new tab), has had her Eastpak suitcase for years, and always uses it for travelling abroad. "This suitcase is ideal for me as I want to be able to pack a lot without running the risk of my luggage being over the weight limit. My Eastpak case fits so much in, but thanks to the fabric shell, it never feels like it's weighing me down."

Best luggage for clothes:

£175 | AWAY

The Garment Bag, £175 | AWAY
This bag can fit two suits or three full-length garments, and features an exterior pocket for easy access to essentials as well as interior pockets for accessories. A zip-out hook makes it easy to hang, while the luggage clip secures it to any AWAY suitcase.

If you're not a fan of rolling up your clothes in a case (this does save loads of space), then a garment bag such as the above one is for you. It'll allow you to keep dresses and suits relatively flat. A carry-on closet suitcase is another great option to keep clothes organised.

Best travel bags:

£249 | Barbour

Highgate Leather Holdall, £249 | Barbour
Perfect for overnight stays, this Barbour holdall showcases a large external zip for a secure and protected fastening. A front zip pocket adds handy storage while a removable shoulder strap offers an alternative carry method.

Though less easy to drag around than a suitcase, a travel bag is a great space-saving choice, especially if you're heading on a mini break by car. In fact, our Senior Beauty Editor, Katie Thomas (opens in new tab), loves using her Barbour luggage for exactly that.

"I use my Barbour holdall when I'm going away for the weekend back to the country. It's the perfect accompaniment to muddy wellies and cosy jumpers. The fabric is always hardy and long-wearing and I never worry about longevity. I've had mine for years and it's still going strong." So, there you have it. Keep on scrolling for more top picks.

Penny Goldstone is the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire, covering everything from catwalk trends to royal fashion and the latest high street and Instagram must-haves.

Penny grew up in France and studied languages and law at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris before moving to the UK for her MA in multimedia journalism at Bournemouth University. She moved to the UK permanently and has never looked back (though she does go back regularly to stock up on cheese and wine).

Although she's always loved fashion - she used to create scrapbooks of her favourite trends and looks, including Sienna Miller and Kate Moss' boho phase - her first job was at MoneySavingExpert.com, sourcing the best deals for everything from restaurants to designer sales.

However she quit after two years to follow her true passion, fashion journalism, and after many years of internships and freelance stints at magazines including Red, Cosmopolitan, Stylist and Good Housekeeping, landed her dream job as the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire UK.

Her favourite part of the job is discovering new brands and meeting designers, and travelling the world to attend events and fashion shows. Seeing her first Chanel runway IRL at Paris Fashion Week was a true pinch-me moment.
